Lord, it is only morning And my needs are already stacked In a long, desperate line. It was just when I felt best That everything went wrong. By the time I saw my trouble, I was already sealed inside it. Now, I wake to fear And the taste of blood. I can’t set a foot outside my door, Nor can’t touch half The memories left to me. I hear the wet swish of tongues Whetting razor words. I don’t know why my enemies hate me, But they talk arrows every time their mouths open, And my heart’s sky is blotted black with them. But God remains my defender. He arcs their bolts back at them, And their words bend awry And fall at their own feet. When he stands, I’ll be safe. My enemies will wonder and run. Their wagging words will stutter and stun. So, take heart. Take shelter. As quick as you call, he comes. Just the minute you need him, he runs.
